Squares = roof surface area ÷ 100. Surface area is the flat footprint multiplied by the pitch factor, which is √(rise² + 144) ÷ 12.

A 10% waste allowance is typical for a simple gable. Complex hip roofs with lots of valleys often run 15% or more.

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Material is ordered in squares, and three bundles of standard architectural shingles cover roughly one square.

How does pitch change the area?

Pitch multiplies the flat footprint. A 6/12 roof has a pitch multiplier of about 1.118, so 2,000 sq ft of footprint becomes roughly 2,236 sq ft of roof surface.

Estimates only. Always verify against field measurements before ordering material.
